NEWARK ARTS AND MUSIC FESTIVAL DEBUTS IN HALSEY VILLAGE
Activities, Art, Music, Food and Fun for All Ages
Newark, NJ – Recognizing the fact that the City of Newark is rapidly growing economically, politically, socially and culturally, a group of motivated local business owners, artists and residents formed a committee to organize the Newark Arts & Music Festival @ Halsey Village (NAMF) taking place on Saturday, June 9th from 11:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. The colorful festival will be held on Halsey Street between Washington Park and New Street, showcasing exhibits and talents of local and regional artists and musicians, live performances, a sculpture garden, imaginative children’s activities and vendors from throughout Essex County.
During the day, audiences of all ages can participate in a diverse variety of activities including art exhibits and live music ranging from a steel drum band and symphony strings to indie and alternative rock, to klezmer, rockabilly and more. Food, jewelry, and crafts merchants will line the once sleepy street. Children’s entertainment includes interactive activities such as creating a mural, face painting, art demonstrations and puppet making.
Two outdoor soundstages will be set up – one on Halsey Street and one in Washington Park. Both stages will feature a variety of performances. The Washington Park stage will also host children’s entertainment, and close down at 6pm. The Halsey Street stage will continue to feature live entertainment throughout the evening, with enhanced festivities inside participating bars and restaurants in the area including 27Mix, Kilkenny Alehouse and McGovern’s.
To encourage the expansion of the “Halsey Village Commons” as one of the city’s premier arts and entertainment districts, NAMF has been established as an annual celebration designed to promote further development of the district and increase attention to the neighborhood as an area in Downtown Newark where the entire community can congregate to appreciate music, art and food. Halsey Village is comprised of local businesses and establishments such as 27Mix, Kilkenny Alehouse and McGovern’s, The Newark Museum, artist studios and galleries, including Aljira and RedSaw Art Gallery, and shops such as Newark Art Supply – a husband/wife owned store where local artists, students and other merchants conveniently shop for reasonably priced art supplies.
“Having invested in the area for more than eight years, I take deep satisfaction in experiencing the surge of interest in this area – the residents, artists, businesses and local merchants are finally getting the exposure they deserve,” said Dave Anstatt festival organizer and co-owner of downtown hotspot 27Mix, located on Halsey Street. “18 months ago my partners and I opened the first new restaurant in the area in years; at the time, we thought it would be a great idea to integrate music, art and food into the neighborhood. The momentum and support from the community that the festival has gained in such a short period of time demonstrates that our timing is right, and we are all moving forward.”
Long-time Halsey Village resident, Gary Bodine, is looking forward to the festival and says, “The north end of Halsey has, for many years, had potential to become a community. The Newark Arts & Music Festival @ Halsey Village is a great example of what a small group of concerned, local individuals can do to enrich their neighborhood.”
Event sponsors include Amelior/MCJ Foundation, Verizon, Prudential Financial, Star-Ledger, PSE&G, Cogswell Realty Group, Edison Parking and Heritage Management.
“We are pleased to partner with the Newark Arts & Music Festival for an event that highlights the vibrancy of downtown Newark,” said NJ TRANSIT Assistant General Manager of Newark Light Rail Joyce Gallagher. “The Newark Light Rail has long been part of the fabric of the city, and the new extension linking Newark Penn and Broad Street stations will provide quick and easy access for all festival goers.”
The Festival has attracted the support of local community organizations and businesses including 27Mix, GlassRoots, Halsey Associates, JAR Realty, Kilkenny Alehouse, McGovern’s, New Jersey Symphony Orchestra, Newark Art Supply, Newark Bears, Newark Downtown District, Newark Now, The Newark Museum, Redsaw Art Gallery Rutgers School of Visual Arts and Zing Marketing.
To get there: be gentle on the environment and take NJ TRANSIT to either Newark Penn Station or Broad Street Station, then take the Newark Light Rail to the Washington Park stop. While visiting the Festival, be sure to also check out The Newark Museum’s “Bugmania 2” (49 Washington Street); the Newark Public Library (5 Washington Street) and the Newark Bears (450 Broad Street), who have a home game that evening.
